Skills Over MCP Interest Group - Office Hours

This Interest Group explores how "agent skills" (rich, structured instructions for agent workflows) can be discovered and consumed through MCP. Native skills support in host applications demonstrates strong demand, but the community hasn't aligned on whether existing MCP primitives suffice or what conventions to standardize. Cross-cutting collaboration is needed because solutions touch the protocol spec, registry schema, SDK implementations, and client behavior.

This IG Office Hours will be a time to drop in and chat about any topics we want to continue or didn't cover from the last meeting.

This discussion thread is for adding topics you want to bring up on 2/26 and adding notes afterward. Please add any topics to https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/modelcontextprotocol/discussions/2281 that you know you want to discuss on 2/26!

More context from Discord:

Instead of trying to get everyone lined up around the world for a single 30-60 minutes every now and then, we're going to experiment with setting up regular drop-in windows. These will be times where people can hop in for discussion as they're available, rather than one scheduled meeting everyone needs to attend.

Please drop your availability for other times here → https://timeful.app/e/cdfcA

  • Based on the Timeful results, we will put a few recurring windows on the public MCP calendar
  • Join whichever works for you
  • Whoever's in a session can volunteer to report back notes to the group

The main goal is to let us chat more frequently without it being either overly rigid or overly random. it might also just help to know "people are more likely to be around on Discord at these times."

What's the difference with an Office Hours vs a Meeting?

  • No quorum expectation. A capital-M Meeting implies "we need the right people here to make progress." Drop-in windows say "whoever shows up, that's the meeting."
  • Multiple windows. Even if we start with one this week, the intent is to offer a few, so people aren't locked out by timezone.
  • Lower stakes for missing it. The report-back norm means people don't feel like they have to attend every one to stay in the loop.
